Maryse Carmichael joined the Canadian Forces in 1990 and earned her wings in 1994.


Maryse Carmichael always aimed high; she's a jet pilot. Maryse became an Air Cadet at 13 and got her pilot's permit when she was still a teenager.

Her brother was a pilot and this is what motivated her to become a pilot herself. But she succeeded in doing something more – Maryse is the first woman to be part of the Snowbirds precision flying team!


Did you know? Maryse Carmichael has over 2,400 hours of jet flying experience!


With six years as a captain Maryse makes about $72,000 a year. In the winter her work schedule is Monday to Friday, nine to five. Her schedule changes drastically in the summer when she travels around Canada for air shows. Then she works on the weekends and takes days off during the week.

SYNOPSIS:

Since the 1930's, the military precision flight teams have been a big part of the history of Canadian aviation. The Snowbirds, as we know them today, started in 1971. Their mission is to show the public the skills, professionalism and teamwork that are hallmarks of the Canadian Forces.

Maryse succeeded in getting a much sought-after job. If this kind of work appeals to you, you should know that in Canada, 40 per cent of the military jet pilots are set to retire within the next 10 years. The Canadian Forces have more than 500 planes spread out over 13 military bases.
